Educational Visit “Be an Active Citizen”
Date of visit: May, 9th 2025
Primary school: Lučac, Split
On May 9th, as part of the educational initiative “Be an active citizen”, we visited 1st grade pupils of Primary School Lučac. The aim of the visit was to encourage civic engagement, European values and volunteering among the youngest. May 9th was chosen as the symbolic date for marking Europe Day.
During the meeting, an interactive presentation was held on the European Union and its fundamental values: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality and respect for human rights. The emphasis was placed on understanding togetherness, respect and responsibility, through examples close to children’s everyday lives.
Volunteers from the ESN-Split also participated in the activity, who presented the Erasmus+ programme and the importance of volunteering in simple and child-friendly language. Their personal stories and experiences further enriched the content and enabled students to see the topic through the perspective of young people who are actively changing the world around them.
A special tool in this activity was the leaflet "Be an active citizen", which is visually adapted for children and contains messages about the importance of participation, respect for others, environmental protection and spreading positive messages. The leaflet also contains concrete ideas for action - from participating in school projects and eco-actions, to learning about different cultures and the values of the European Union.
The children followed the entire program with enthusiasm, actively participated, raised questions and showed great interest in the topics presented to them. Their reactions confirmed that the approach based on a combination of visual materials, interactive presentations and direct contact with young volunteers has a strong educational effect and motivates children to think as active members of society from an early age. At the end of the presentation, a short quiz was held to check whether the children had assimilated the contents presented. The students answered all the questions correctly, which is an indicator of a successfully implemented activity.
The visit proved to be an extremely successful pilot activity. The leaflet was well received and very effective in terms of communication for targeting the age group. The combination of education, inspiration and concrete proposals for action represents an excellent model for future activities in schools.
